Gavin is equal parts craftsman, project manager, and family man. He is proud to have built Pura Vida Homes as a family-run business that combines his love for the outdoors, his commitment to quality craftsmanship and his progressive, ecologically conscious values. Gavin’s professional background includes extensive experience in residential and commercial carpentry, as well as in project management of the design-build process for single-family homes, multi-family homes, and subdivisions. Gavin is particularly interested in straw bale building techniques and recently completed his training to become a Passive House certified consultant.

As owner of Pura Vida Homes, Gavin Tenold is licensed and bonded as a general contractor, and is one of the only Spokane-based green contractors to be fully insured to build straw bale homes in Washington and Idaho.

Anne Grayhek Tenold

Vice President and Marketing Director

(B.S., Portland State University)

Anne has a background in business, project management, and public health education. Her passion is helping individuals build healthy lifestyles, healthy families, and healthy communities. At Pura Vida, she works to partner with skilled local craftspeople and green-focused businesses in the Inland Northwest to create a growing community of like-minded individuals who care about the planet and helping families live in safe, healthy, and energy efficient homes. Both Gavin and Anne were born and raised in Spokane, Washington where they learned to value the natural splendor of the Inland Northwest.

Pura Vida Homes offers the Inland Northwest a mindful alternative to “business as usual” home building. When Gavin Tenold first started building homes almost a decade ago, he quickly realized that traditional home building too often results in wasteful, impersonal, over-time and over-budget homes that don’t reflect the client’s personality or values. A home could go up in 90 days, but the foundation would crack within a year. Local, sustainable, energy-efficient materials were ignored, not because they were necessarily more expensive but because they didn’t fit with the industry’s status quo. That’s when Gavin became determined to offer a fresh approach to fine home building. Soon after, the idea for Pura Vida Homes was born.

OUR VALUES:

- CRAFTSMANSHIP. We build homes with a craftsmanship perspective; our homes look and feel beautiful, and will last even longer than a lifetime.
- SUSTAINABILITY. We build truly green homes; our homes are energy efficient, have minimal impact on the ecosystem and are built with sustainability in mind every step of the way.
- CLIENT-CENTERED BUILDING. We build homes because we love helping make a family’s dream come true. We believe that an affordable, high-performance home needn’t come at the expense of a wonderful working relationship with our clients and aim to prove this each and every day.

As lifelong residents of the Spokane area, Pura Vida owners Gavin and Anne Tenold are deeply committed to the business practice of supporting local craftspeople, trade partners, suppliers and organizations to keep our dollars and resources within our community. As such, the rest of the Pura Vida team is made up of some of the region’s most trusted construction specialists.

In addition, Pura Vida provides annual sponsorship to the following organizations because we believe in the organization’s mission and the work they do to provide programs that develop our local community and protect our local ecosystems.

- Spokane YMCA: Partners for Youth Campaign
- The Lands Council and their Project S.U.S.T.A.I.N
- Spokane Public Radio
- Rebuilding Together Spokane

Dear Gavin and Anne,

We are so thrilled with our new home and can’t thank you enough!

When we look back at our pictures we can’t believe what has transpired since that first day the lines were marked on the land and the excavation began. We remember the framing and the building of the straw bale walls, which now appear smooth and rounded from the plaster and stucco. We look at the exposed beams and crafted woodwork which all seem to have magically appeared to provide those fine finishing touches. It is impressive indeed and more than we ever imagined it could be! In fact, we feel like pinching ourselves to make sure that it is still not a just a dream!

We appreciate all that you have done to make this dream a reality. We found the entire building experience to be most pleasant and want to thank you for your friendship throughout the entire building process. We can’t say enough! We are proud to call ourselves homeowners of a Pura Vida Home and highly recommend your company to anyone looking for a high quality product!

Thank you so much!

- Dave and Nancy Brown,
